What is NTI?
Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) represents Inuit of Nunavut and works to ensure the Nunavut Agreement is implemented. NTI manages Inuit-owned lands, funds, programs, and advocates for and advances Inuit rights and interests.
What is the NTI President election?
The NTI by-election for President will determine who becomes NTI’s President, to lead the organization until the next Presidential election in December 2028, and to become the leading voice for Inuit.
When is the election?
The NTI by-election for President will be held on May 27, 2026.
Who can vote?
You can vote if you are Inuk, enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement, 16 years of age or older as of the election day, and registered on the voters list.
Who can run for NTI President?
Candidates must be Nunavut Inuit and meet NTI eligibility requirements stated in NTI By-Laws and policies.
How long is the President’s term?
The successful candidate will hold office until the conclusion of the NTI Presidential election in December 2028.
Voting Information
Where do I vote?
You can vote at your local polling station, at advance polls, at mobile polls, by mail or proxy.
Can I vote if I live in Southern Canada?
Yes. If you are Inuk, enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement, 16 years of age or older, and registered on the voters list, you may vote at one of the designated Southern polling locations or by mail or proxy.
Where can I vote in Southern Canada?
Polling stations will be available in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Yellowknife, and Ottawa.
What do I need to bring to vote?
Bring identification such as an NTI enrolment card or government-issued ID. Please be sure your name on the ID is same as that you used to enroll with NTI.
How do I register to vote?
You must be enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement. To register, contact your local CLO, contact NTI Enrolment Secretariat, or visit NTI’s website.
What is advance voting?
Advance voting allows you to vote before election day at designated times.
What is a mail ballot?
A mail ballot is one that you request from the Chief Returning Officer to vote by mail when you cannot vote in person.
What is a proxy vote?
A proxy vote allows an eligible voter to authorize another person to vote on their behalf.
Can I vote more than once?
No. You can only vote once.
Can I refuse a ballot?
Yes. You are not required to vote, even if you are registered. However, NTI strongly encourages you to vote, as your voice matters.
Assistance and Accessibility
What if I need help voting?
Contact the office of the Chief Returning Officer or the Deputy Chief Returning Officer in your community (generally the CLO) and a mobile poll may be available to allow you to vote at your convenience depending on availability in your community.
Is the polling station wheel-chair accessible?
Not all polling stations are wheel-chair accessible. Please contact your local CLO if you need assistance.
Are ballots available in Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun?
Ballots will be available in English, Inuktitut, and Inuinnaqtun.
Election Process
What happens if I make a mistake on my ballot?
You can request a new ballot from an election clerk.
How are votes counted?
Votes are counted in each community after polls close, following NTI election policies.
Can a candidate appoint a scrutineer?
Yes, each official candidate can appoint one scrutineer in each community to attend the vote counting process.
Who oversees the election?
NTI has appointed a Chief Returning Officer (CRO) to manage the process. NTI also appointed a third-party Election Commissioner to decide on any dispute.
What happens after the election?
Results are announced immediately after the vote counting and the new President is sworn in.
Campaigns and Candidates
How can I learn about candidates?
Attend events, listen to radio, follow social media, and read articles from trusted news outlets.
Can candidates campaign anywhere?
Candidates must follow NTI campaign rules and guidelines, which can be found on the NTI website.
Is there a spending limit for campaigns?
An official candidate cannot incur expenses more than $40,000 in total .
Are there official debates between candidates?
NTI plans to host an all candidates debate at the Aqsarniit Hotel in Iqaluit on May 15, 2026 (subject to further confirmation/change).

How do I update my voter information?
Contact NTI Enrolment Secretariat before the registration deadline (normally the end of the nomination period, which was April 21, 2026 for the by-election).
Can I still vote if I miss the deadline to update my information?
Yes. You can still vote. Please bring IDs or other documents to prove your identity or any changing circumstances (e.g., name change).
Are youth encouraged to vote?
Yes. Youth aged 16 and older are eligible and encouraged to vote.
What is voter turnout?
Voter turnout refers to how many eligible voters participate in the election.
Can media cover polling stations?
Media access is usually restricted to protect voter privacy.
What if I lose my ID?
Contact the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) for acceptable alternatives. Generally you can vote as long as you can prove who you are.
